+166 Art teachers shouldn't put their own opinions (whether or not they like how the art looks) into students' grades, amirite?

I think art teachers need to understand how well their students work, and know what they're good at, and judge it by that standard. Not every student in an art and design class is going to know everything. But in higher classes, I do think the teacher should expect more than a half-assed circle and some stick figures.

Ummm... Okay, I'm in the middle here. I agree for any students that are younger and any students that are not taking art seriously and as a "fun" class. However, by grade eleven and twelve certain students are trying to grow as artists so if it looks like shit I know I certainly want my teacher to be critical. I would be pissed if my college art prof I have now aren't telling me my work looks like shit. I had a teacher a few years ago trying to help me with my painting. I wasn't sure about it so I asked her what she thought. She told me it looked great. I got it back and I got a 60%, which for grade 11 was bad for me. I was a little annoyed. But for a student who knows they won't continue in art... Yah. Of course, if you mean it simply isn't their style, like a picture is abstract when the teacher only likes realism... yah they need to keep those opinions to themselves.

I did mean what you said in the second part, and I pretty much agree with everything else you said smile The main reason I made this post is because my art teacher this year (I go a arts high school and I'm in my third year with a "focus" on 3D) barely tells us what the requirements are for the project, tells us to be creative, and then 20% of our grade is whether it's "aesthetically pleasing." I might just be overreacting, but I sort of feel like he's telling us to be creative, but only in a way that he thinks looks good.

It like grading an English paper. Their person opinions shouldn't matter, but their professional opinions do. Otherwise you could turn in a completely shit piece of work and demand an A because an F is just the teacher's opinion.

This is why, in order to get good grades, you find out what your teacher likes and kiss their ass repeatedly. Lesson for life.
