The Levi's "go forth" ad string uses powerful images, provocative words, and it is centered around the power of youth culture. Watching these commercials really makes you think "wow... levi's has completely forgotten that they make pants", amirite?

...Advertising doesn't have to be "hey, we make good pants!" It has to appeal to the audience and for most people, listening to someone talk about pants isn't going to work. Levi's is selling jeans but it's also trying to sell this sense of youth and freedom that's more likely to make people buy their product.

I get what your saying, but its not accurate. A commercial is there to market a product 99% of the time. Yet, the product is never clearly identified in these commercials. Furthermore, there is nothing that directly states that something is being marketed in these adds, other than a very brief logo at the end. In old spice commercials, the actor will usually state the the fact that oldspcies is a bodywash/deoderant, and the product is clearly labeled and shown. none of this happens in these commercials.

my real problem is Levi's takes itself so seriously. When you emphasize leadership, youth, and prosperity in your pants commercial, and you aren't being ironic than you deserve to be fired. Furthermore, if you buy pants because of these commercials than you perpetuate the lie that these people think which is "kids will buy anything if we market it as hip and edgy." our culture is wise to marketing. Its tacky, tactless, and just pathetic.

Exactly, denim is hardly the key component in social change. You'll never see a commercial like this from a group that actually represents youth culture like i don't know facebook, mac, pc, xbox, etc.
