+87 If you consider that 5 out of 6 inmates who get the box get it for non-violent misconduct, solitary confinement is really an inhumane policy, amirite?

It's still inhumane when they've committed a violent crime, it's just slightly more justifiable. Personally I think punishment should be for the sake of rehabilitation rather than just for the sake of "you did something bad so we're going to do something bad to you." Ex: if you catch your kid smoking, make them smoke till they throw up as opposed to grounding them (I don't actually think that's what you should do it's just an example of the punishment relating to the crime)

An excellent point

I- I do not see what you're getting at here. The point of solitary confinement is to separate any upstarts from the rest of the inmate population, otherwise they can instigate riots and the like.

There are numerous psychological effects that come from long-term solitary confinement. 1 in 3 in solitary become psychotic and are often reported experiencing hallucinations. Many people in solitary confinement end up injuring themselves or becoming catatonic and unable to function. Also a person could end up in solitary for forgetting their serial number or taking too long in the shower, I'm pretty sure you don't start a riot by forgetting your serial number.

And when you consider 5 out of 6 people that go to solitary confinement for non violence...
