At least there's certainty with death, and you can mourn appropriately and continue on with your life; whereas if they went missing with no clues, there's a tiny part of you for the rest of your life that hopes they'll knock on your door one day safe and sound, amirite?

Also, this isn't pleasant to think about, but if they were murdered, at least their suffering is over, whereas if you don't know what happened when they went missing, they could still be being raped/tortured by their kidnapper or something.
