I always go for ((1/p) * c)+1 where p is the total number of people and c is the approximate number of cookies. If in doubt, take 2-3, but not more than 2 at a time.

I'm running into a small problem. If I use this formula when I'm alone and friendless, my end result is c + 1. I'll guess I'll have to make more cookies... forever! Never mind, not a problem!
