Drive by shootings go up as ice cream sales go up. Does ice cream cause drive by shootings? No. (Hotter temperatures mean people buy more ice cream, hotter temperatures also mean people get agitated easier, there really is a correlation between high ice cream sales and drive bys, in case you were wondering.) My point is that people often overlook an important variable (the rise in temperature).

theft also rises in the summer Could be because less people are bundled up at home in hibernation giving the thieves more opportunities "Hey, it's nice and hot today. Let's go get us a toaster"
