It definitely attracts its audience, but I wouldn't say unnecessary violence and gore is awesome.

Human attraction to spectical dictates that the more something differs from our normal life, the more interest it piques. Violence and death is very rarely a norm in our lives, that's also the same reason veterans very very rarely ever get into games like call of duty. The game designers are appealing to mass audience.
