+159 Sometimes you realize how fucking lucky you are for all the conditions you were born into and everything else, and you think of the people who have to work so hard to have what you have and you hate how horrifyingly unfair life is, amirite?

American white girls are so privileged... Ex: I was in court because I missed too many days of school, and there was a Mexican girl who had the same judge as me at the same time (they were doing two cases at once cuz of how many truancy cases there were.) The Mexican girl was having seizures and that's why she missed school. I missed a lot of school because I ditched, and I told the judge that because I'm not going to lie. I got 30 hours community service, she got 40. un I almost pitched a fit and my mom could see that look coming on in my eyes so she had to grab me by the elbow and steer me out of the room before I got myself in more trouble. I wish I would have, the girl (and her parents) just had this defeated look on their face like that's exactly what they expected to happen.

You had to go to court because you miss too many days of school?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah, it's called truancy. Any one under the age of 16 is legally required to be in school, when they miss too much the law steps in.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah, I know it's called truancy, but I've never heard of people going to court because of it, at least not where I'm from. That sucks for the Mexican girl, did she not have a doctor's certificate?

No, but she offered to get one.

That's just...terrible. It's much worse having injustice occur in a place where justice is supposed to prevail. no

To be honest, I seldom forget. Children born into povery are at an extreme disadvantage, and I can't help but think that I would be no different than they are.

I tutor high school students in a poor school district, and they struggle with the simplest things because they were probably raised in an environment that didn't cultivate learning, and on top of that, they probably didn't receive the best education at a young age (when it counts most). They are missing the fundamentals, and I can't help but think that no amount of tutoring will bring them up to the level that more privileged kids are at. Generational poverty and generational lack of education is a tough thing to beat. I'm going to a good university and tutoring, but will they ever even get that chance? I hope I can make a bit of a difference.

I hate thinking about this because it makes me all depressed, but it's hard to forget. I got a brand new car yesterday because my old one had numerous mechanical problems, and I nearly cried when I saw how much it cost. My dad grew up far below the poverty line, and he never fails to remind me and my brother how lucky we are.

yes, but i am too afraid to give up my advantages to equalize it, and thus the cycle continues.
