-47 It's kinda weird that some athiests celebrate Christmas, even though it's supposed to be a Chrsitian holiday, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's a pagan holiday. And no, it's not weird at all.

At this point, some holidays have become so commercialized that for some people, it's more about spending time with the people you care about. Or getting presents. But I understand what you mean, since at the end of the day, the meaning behind it is religious.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I don't I guess I just think it's kinda odd because I wouldn't celebrate Hannakuh or anything like that unless someone in my family practiced that religion. I could see if athiests just celebrated like a "holiday gathering" but if a whole atheist family celebrates Chrsitmas it just seems odd to me. I don't know I guess I'm just weird. :P

1) the atheists generally have some Christians in their family 2) Obviously you wouldn't celebrate Channukah nor Kwanza, because those are not the center of the season, and not most widely celebrated. 3) The way Coke created Christmas, there is absolutely no common Christian traditions that are widely celebrated during Christmas (the majority of people don't attend mass, etc) 4) it's not even originally a Christian holiday, it's Pagan 5) Chances are you wouldn't question a non-Christian celebrating Valentine's Day, nor a Christian celebrating Halloween (a primarily Pagan and fairly UN-christian holiday). 6) All things considered, it's not a Christian holiday anymore. It's a secular holiday to celebrate family and giving.

Ya no you're a big old bag of wrong as fuck. It's obviously still a Christian holiday, people still are well aware of the premis and beliefs. Coke didn't created Christmas, that's fucking stupid. And Halloween is actually Hallows eve, the day before all saints day. A Christian holiday.

I'm agnostic, but Christmas is by far my favorite holiday. I love that so many people can unite and **give** rather than be so focused on getting, even if it's just for one day each year.

I wish I knew what it means for a holiday to be "Chrisitian."

by Anonymous 11 years ago

A holiday created by Christians.. Like Christmas... Because its supposedly Jesus's birthday..

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yet many believe his birthday wasn't actually on December the 25th but that day was just chosen as a pagan celebration already happened on that day (they celebrated the birth of the sun god) and they could get away with celebrating on the 25th without the Romans persecuting them for it. See http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/christmas/3687843/Jesus-was-born-in-June-astronomers-claim.html. Please don't take this as bashing the faith - used to be a Christian myself and my wife still is. Plus it does make sense to gather and celebrate on a day when you're less likely to be killed for doing so. Even though I'm not a Christian now I do still celebrate Christmas but for me the focus has shifted more to giving, spending time with the family and Father Christmas rather than Jesus.

I did say supposedly it was his birthday. And I don't care if you Christian bash haha I'm not Christian anymore.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's a Christian holiday, OP was talking about a "Chrisitian" holiday.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What? We don't get presents because we don't believe in a god? EQUAL RIGHTS MAN

I'm Muslim and I've celebrated Christmas my whole life, and so have all my Muslim friends and family and people I know. Almost everyone celebrates Christmas in my country, whether Christian or not, except for those really religious people or people who don't want to and shit.

It is just a time of happiness, comfort and family! It is no longer a fully christian holiday.
