But everyone have the right to punch you in the face if you offend them.

As long as they form a nice, orderly line..

So, if I say something inoffensive you have to get offended because you've no right not to?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How about "No one has the right to NEVER be offended"?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why not? Who is taking those rights from them?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why not? Because freedom of speech is our most important freedom. People have been threatened and even killed for insulting the prophet Muhammad (drawing a caricature of the prophet is considered an insult). In a speech recently given to the UN, President Obama (who I tend to like), said "the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam". What?!? The future must not belong to those who threaten and kill other people for their beliefs. In fact, I would go so far as to say the people who show compassion and concern to those who would silence "offensive" language through violence are part of the problem.

You didn't even consider what I said. You just said a bunch of stuff about Islam. Why doesn't anyone have the right never to get offended?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm trying. I guess I'm not understanding your question. People do not have the right to never be offended because, to have such a right would preclude others from free speech.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wait. Are you trying to say that everyone has the right to be offended and just going about it in an awkward way or what?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No. I'm trying to say that people have a right to express themselves. If other people find their ideas offensive, that's too bad. People do not have the right to never be offended. Does that make sense?
