When a hurricane like Irene or Katrina comes along and wipes out places way below sea level or far too close to the beach, what is the sense of building these places back? Why should taxpayers have to pay for it? Nature is just going to reclaim its own. Does it really make sense to expect a city below sea level to survive? This is not Holland.

I didn't get the remark about Holland?

Um, because people lived there and are now in need of a place to stay? After Katrina, thousands of people were left homeless and had to relocate. Many went back thanks to reconstuction efforts, but if you hadn't done anything (which is what I'm getting from this post) those people's lives would've been completly destroyed, and we wouldn't have done anything to help them.

Why is it unsafe for a city to be built below sea level?
