Sometimes an author does such a good job developing the characters in his/her story that you honestly feel like you've lost a friend when the character(s) die.

That's precisely the book I was thinking about when I wrote that. I just got done reading it.

The characters existed in the authors' minds before they wrote the book and they exist in our minds afterwards.
