With words like smile, foul, fire, scowl and hour, it's hard to tell how many syllables it truly has, amirite?

they're all one syllable

except hour
which is two syllables
I find that surprising

But do you pronounce foul like towel? I would make foul two syllables.

Plus I often say smy-ull, making that two but I sometimes do say smyl making it one.

And I also say fire like fighter with no t, which would be two.

I did a quick search on dictionary.com
they may be informal so that could be it

they usually show alternative pronunciations
but I didn't see it for the ones you listed

aren't there certain words that have only one official way of pronunciation?

vase has more
caramel too
etc

Yeah, but I'm simply saying it out loud and deciding whether I want to say it's fy-ur or fyr. I can't really choose...

you can say it in any way you please
you can alternate if you choose
