There is no rational reason for which an American civilian should want to own an assault weapon.

-yawn- Boring argument is boring, but I guess I'll chime in anyway...

With that logic, there's no rational reason for which an American should own about half of the things the typical American owns. Now, ignoring the fact that an assault weapon could be used as a defensive mechanism, the reason people buy anything isn't always for rational purpose other than satisfaction of purchase. Who needs a sports car? Nobody, but they're fun to drive and maintain so people buy them. Who needs a 4 bedroom house when a 1 bedroom home would suffice? Nobody, but some people have the money to spend on a 4 bedroom home and therefore have the right to own one. Once again, ignoring that a gun can actually be a tool in defending yourself, who needs a gun? Nobody, but if somebody can afford to buy one (or even make one themselves), then they have the right to own it.

Maybe not according to the law, but according to basic human rights which are determined by the ambition of each individual, yes.

Governments own nuclear materials. What about the "rights" of the government?

Yep.. I'm just some crazy guy for suggesting that people should have the same rights as their government. After all, it's supposedly the people who make up the government, right?

There are plenty of "rational" reasons. Most just aren't very good or relevant.
