If I dislike the idea of a post, if I vote on it at all, I'll downvote it. For example, a post that says, "You are using amirite right now, amirite?" is ridiculously obvious, not any form of an opinion, and doesn't belong on this site. Amirite is not about upvotes and downvotes, so I really hate it when people make posts solely for the purpose of getting most people to agree.
why waste a vote on it at all?
you said amirite isn't about upvotes and downvotes
but when you use it as a reward/punishment
you're doing exactly that
making amirite about upvotes and downvotes
if you don't think the post belongs
then report it
if that doesn't work
at least you tried
downvoting is not solving anything
(unlike reporting the post)
you're not using the button for it's intended purpose
it's seen as a punishment
when disagreeing with someone shouldn't be seen as a punishment in the first place
that's why so many people on here think that when you disagree with their posts a lot
it's a personal attack
and that you hate them or something
I've seen it countless times
"why don't you like me?" based on downvoting that person many times
and according the Michael's comment in that link
you see that some people downvote merely because they don't like the user
that's exactly what this post is frowning upon
Well I kind of get voting down obvious posts. Not as a punishment thing, but reporting it usually doesn't do anything, and I think if I were to try to say it achieves something, it would achieve discouraging users from making posts just for the upvotes.
I've never really considered votes to be so valuable that it's a "waste" to use them on a silly post. Besides, I can't help but feel like I am disagreeing with a post if I'm disagreeing with the basic idea of the it. If I disagree with a post that exists for upvotes, I'm going to express my disagreement with a downvote. I've never actually done it with the intention of punishing someone.
I will admit that I haven't disliked the idea of a post enough to downote in a long time. Lately, if there is something I don't like about a post, or I think about an exception, I just move on.
Also, I find it funny that this is the second time that I've had this argument about my voting habits
"I've never actually done it with the intention of punishing someone."
my post says "you don't agree with using downvotes as a punishment"
wasting isn't dependent on valuable
paper money is more valuable than a piece of notebook paper
but throwing either out would be wasting regardless of value
You make it very hard to argue when you have a better argument than me
I've officially changed my vote, but while I'll think twice before disagreeing on a post, I still think that the idea of a post is important enough to determine how I vote on it.
I know what post inspired this post
To add, because of that post: I don't like when the person down votes every comment that opposed them- especially not when they're stating facts. I understand if you down vote every comment because you disagree with them, though that seems like a lot of effort. But I've seen a lot of people down vote comments that make a good rebuttal against them because they're proven wrong, and I think that's silly, and also what you said about the other situations- it's childish. I've also seen people just down vote every comment that takes a different stance than they do, I think that's silly and childish too, especially when they don't bother commenting back to explain their own side.
if you think the post is obvious
why waste a vote on it anyways?
obviousness is objective
may to obvious to you
but not someone else
that's something that really bugs me
I would prefer the voting options to be used for their intended purpose
to agree or disagree
not to portray reward/punishment
it seems silly and childish
The vote isn't wasted if it pisses off the OP who was clearly fishing for upvotes by stating something obvious (not that it really matters these days).
It's often pretty clear when someone fishes for upvotes. Example: "The sky is blue." It's not just some misunderstanding. The sky is obviously blue and OP is obviously fishing, probably thinking to himself, "hur hur.. they can't possibly lie! They'll read my post and have to give me nothing but upvotes! MUHUHAHAAHAHAAHAHAA!!!"
So basically, I don't agree with downvotes being used to punish all of the time. Sometimes, I think it is the best thing to do. Others, I remember this is just a website and nothing about it really matters in my life. So I kinda just go by how I feel at the particular moment.
Downvoted because I don't like the post and it's obvious.
How in the world is the post obvious?
Just an ironic response to the post...
