Why do we help older people cross the road ?

In modern day society when we see an older person attempting to cross a road we stop to help, though this person has most likely been crossing roads on their own twice a day since the age of 10.

Why do we stop to help older strangers compared to anybody else in the street? and does this betray a stereotype that people who look old need help?
