Shouldn't the best universities be in the best cities?

Can we agree that the best universities in America are Harvard and Stanford. Can we also agree that the top cities are Los Angeles and New York? Wouldn't one expect that the best universities would be in the best cities? Wonder why they're not.

Have you noticed that almost all of the best cities and universities have been around for centuries? When the best cities and universities were first established, neither of the were the best at anything, so their location wasn't important. To use your examples, when New York became one of the "best" places to live, and Harvard became known as one of the best universities, both had been around for a long time, so I doubt one would have been willing to move for the other.

To add to that, all of the best cities today are very populated, so any university that isn't already in the city (like Columbia and NYU in New York City for example) wouldn't even fit.
