What do you see as the changing role of art museums in urban life?

When I was young, I thought of art museums as showcases of the best of visual art, displayed quietly with plaques beside the works indicating titles and artists. Some of the art I found extremely uncommunicative and unappealing, as if it were meant for audiences with knowledge or tastes very different from mine. There was nothing interactive about the museum, as i recall- visitors walked through and looked.

Fast forward to today and we find so many museums have embraced an entirely new vision of what is important to showcase, how to display works, and how to engage visitors in the experience.

What do you think belongs in an art museum? How should it be displayed? Must a museum be a stationary building, or should it move about the community or the broader world?
