What do you think of as a mental illness? And do you think mental illness is an actual serious illness?

There are many types of mental illnesses from obsessive compulsive disorder to depression, but oftentimes when you are stricken with these typed of illness the sympathy and support that friends and family usually give you disappears. Why is that? Is it simply they don't understand or is it that they don't believe it's an actual illness?

Yes it can be serious. To define is difficult but I would say when mental processes or behaviors become a hindrance to self-sustained lifestyle then intervention is appropriate. If a person able to provide their own basic needs: food, shelter then they are within a range of normal. If they are unable to to that then they have an "illness."

Mental illness is a serious illness. And people who have been diagnosed with a disorder should at least get therapy because in general it does help.
