Is it better to sacrifice your family for your career or your career for your family?

I became a father for the first time 3 years ago and have always put them ahead of everything. However lately, after watching colleagues neglect their family in order to secure a pay rise or promotion I have begun to question my beliefs.

Therefore is it better to sacrifice forming a positive relationship with your family in order to further your career or is it better to pass up roles and promotion that would take you away from your family? Is this purely a 'grass is always greener' scenario or does anyone have any actual regrets over the choices they made during their life?
