Is the division of time into the past, the present and the future merely an idea?

The fact that since times immemorial, people have been being encouraged to forget the past and live in the present proves that the task has not been accomplished. Is the past a separate entity? Isn't time always 'flowing' and don't we experience all the three states simultaneously?
How different is knowing your past from living in the past?

I would say yes. Western society tends to see time as linear, but there have been cultures that regard time as more circular and fluid.
