It lets us know when we're hurt, so that we don't repeat it. And yet there are things we repeat time after time. Are humans as a whole masochistic? Or just stupid?

Neither, of course. Some of them might be the one or the other. That set aside, even animals overcome pain when driven by something more powerful. Oh, and humans have a powerful ability to transcend their primal instincts and to reach a superior level of self-control in order to achieve great things.
