It makes you mad that nearly half-million untested rape-kits sit in police evidence rooms across the USA. Some are decades old. Each dusty and forgotten kit represents a human being whose body is a living crime scene.

Google: the SAFER act - Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence Reporting act. This often confused with the SAFE act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement act. ) Get your priorities straight.

States struggle to tackle backlog of untested rape kits | Al Jazeera AmericaNationwide about 400,000 rape kits remain untested, according to the Department of Justicehttp://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/2/23/bills-seek-to-tacklebacklogofuntestedrapekits.html

We as a society spend money on so many unnecessary things, when in reality tbings like this should be a top priority. We should make it a priority to have enough labs , techs & equipment to support our casekoad of crime scene evidence. And horrible crimes like rape & murder should be fast tracked because everyday that goes by that a case is left unsolved, we are basicalky saying WE DON'T MIND the fact that there is a rapist or killer on the loose potentially hunting victims & committing even more crimes.

I'm confused

most rapes are done by someone you know

so can't they just use that kit to prosecute?

The kits are untested. Samples were taken from the "crime scene" are never tested or analysed. Until the police actually "test" the sample, the kits sits in the evidence room and the victims wait - and wait - and wait.

@VicZinc yes. No trial until testing is complete.

ridiculous

that just leaves room for the rapist to strike again

@fuzala ridiculous that just leaves room for the rapist to strike again

And get away. And come back to do it again and escape again

@fuzala ridiculous that just leaves room for the rapist to strike again

Though even with testing the rapist can strike again cause no one knows who it is still. Here there have been a lot of cases done by the same guy and no one knows who he is. Most likely he doesn't even live here.

It's a little misleading. The vast majority of those kits are taken of dead corpses in which sexual attack were not suspected but performed anyways. Since no sexual assault was indicated, the kit is deemed low priority and usually is never processed, but stored.
