3rd party candidates are spoilers, not real candidates.
I vote third party more often than not. You couldn't pay me to vote for one of the big two...
You might think that, the only people who think that are those who have a favorite in the two major parties, but when a person votes third party it is because they already dislike both major candidates...
So it isn't who "I" dislike the most, but perhaps who "you" dislike the most.
The vote, when tabulated, is attributed to the candidate they like, not those they dislike. I realize this is true math and it escapes many, but give it a try with one-to-one counting, using M&Ms, perhaps? You will no doubt see that the vote, or M&M is indeed attributed to the candidate selected, not a different a candidate.
Besides, it is not my responsibility to elect the candidate other people favor most, they only get one vote, not mine and theirs.
Yeah, I get that you would have preferred GHWB to win, but obviously others didn't... or they would have voted for him.
That's the real takeaway in all this, not everyone shares your "lesser evil" mentality. If Repubs want to win elections, they'll have to start acting like Repubs and supporting Republicanism.
Conservatives seem as though they feel entitled to libertarian votes or libertarian help in electing their candidates. Like I said, you get one vote, not mine and yours. So... rather than scolding people who vote third party, produce a candidate that third party votes will actually vote for... seems the simplest solution.
I stopped short of noting how completely unconservative GHWB given I'm not a conservative and thus not best positioned to guage that.
But to see a conservative call GHWB a "conservative" is the best example thus far of why many libertarians won't vote for conservatives.
Our political philosophies are so far removed from one another we've little to nothing in common.
That appears to be the main problem in American politics. Perhaps this is why so many identify with Trump? At least his says it aloud. lol
Agreed. He was the only example I could use of someone actually espousing what many cons practice, but won't say. lol
I agree with what you've said 100%
After Trump threw the RNC under the bus last night I started thinking about the scenario you painted above - SCARY.
Think about this! What if Sanders runs on a socialist ticket?
i could possibly...but it would depend on the candidate...The reason we got the fraud we have now is because of third party voters. I admit that i had to hold my nose and vote republican, but we have a two party system, and third party is very unlikely to ever win.
It wouldn't be the first time that I did.
Abso-fucking-lutely not what is this garbage.. You kids and your third parties goddamn aren't two enough
If there is no candidate with Libertarian values in the big 2, I'm going with the Libertarian candidate. I'm hoping for Rand Paul to win the Republican nomination.
A choose not to participate. Instead, I'll sit back with popcorn and watch the monkeys throw feces on each other
I have before. I would again. I'd love to see a third party candidate get enough votes to shut down the electoral college.
Are you a socialist too dwf?
That's what voting is all about - finding the right candidate (in your opiion) and voting for them. It's not about what party they are.
I am Canadian
Oh come on Sailor! Don't let a little thing like citizenship slow you down from voting for a democrat!
The Canadian Federal Election was just yesterday.
Yes, I know. I hear it might not have gone well for Canada.
But this question was about the 2016 election in the USA, so, silly me - I assumed you were commenting on the topic. And, then made a joke, which gets less and less funny with every word I need to write to explain it. You see, democrats in the USA are trying to import immigrants.... never mind - you're Canadian.
At least Harper didn't win, AGAIN.
I hope the new Prime Minister is not a Canadian version of George W. Bush or Obama. Some of the things this guy supports scares me a bit. The new Prime Minster's Dad was also Prime Minister but that was a long time ago.
Trudeau has vowed to legalize marijuana, take in more Syrian refugees, be more active on fighting climate change, raise taxes on the wealthy and use deficit spending to improve infrastructure. - Sounds like an Obama to me!
We are doomed
Well, look at the bright side - you won't be flooded with citizens of USA looking to bail out of a socialist country just to land in another.
I felt the same way when Obama won the first time and 2nd time? OMG - then I knew the the socialist tide had turned.
If you are more conservative, you and your like minded friends can not rest. We've found that people we thought were conservative really were not when it came to voting on legislation. We can no longer just be citizens and trust our representatives to do the right thing. Decades of that kind of behavior allowed progressives to inch forward and finally put an ass like Obama in office who thinks he is a king!
The last 7 - 8 years have been miserable (politically) and kind of scary - thinking about my grandchildren never knowing the country I grew up in.
Stay strong Sailor. One thing that helped me a lot early on was learning I wasn't alone in my thinking. We have the Tea Party here. (No, they do not have green scales, or push old ladies over cliffs in their wheel chairs.) Just regular people that don't want government sticking it's nose into every aspect of our lives. Maybe you can find find something analogous in Canada.
I'm a NDP person, but you got good points there.
Harper was the conservative party (He had to go) He was in power for too long and he was well corrupt. He was acting like a king, before he left. If you don't believe me, a friend of mine who is a singer, had to deal with Harper on Harper's kid's Birthday party, I don't know for how many years.
I have no reason to doubt you. I have enough trouble keeping up with USA politics let alone Canada.
Sounds like you don't really favor either candidate. I've been there too. I hope it works out well for you.
People who say they are not voting. Are ignorant and stupid. It's an Honor. Be grateful you live in America.
All ANY popular 3rd party candidate does is hand the election over to the party that candidate is farthest from in ideals.
