"Aeroplane" is the same as airplane, but it was used before "airplane" as it has a Latin or Greek prefix "aero-".

Airplane is an americanism, much like calling a dinner jacket without tails a tuxedo, or the loss of the letter 'u' from the word 'colour'. English as spoken by those belonging to the country to which the language belongs does not use a 'z' (pronounced 'zed'), nor remove the Latin from latin-derived words, as seen in this case of 'aero'.
