@ 134689 and @ 134691 " air•plane  –noun 1.a heavier-than-air aircraft kept aloft by the upward thrust exerted by the passing air on its fixed wings and driven by propellers, jet propulsion, etc. 2.any similar heavier-than-air aircraft, as a glider or helicopter. Also, especially British, aeroplane." Taken from http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/airplane It must just be alternate spellings.

Well When People Talk About Airplanes They Say Airplanes. and When They Talk About Aeroplanes They Say Aeroplanes. People Obviously Just Talk About Aeroplanes More Often.

Aeroplanes?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"Aeroplane" is the same as airplane, but it was used before "airplane" as it has a Latin or Greek prefix "aero-".

Airplane is an americanism, much like calling a dinner jacket without tails a tuxedo, or the loss of the letter 'u' from the word 'colour'. English as spoken by those belonging to the country to which the language belongs does not use a 'z' (pronounced 'zed'), nor remove the Latin from latin-derived words, as seen in this case of 'aero'. [For reference I am Australian. We here have an education system.]

Regardless of the education system, I seem to recall many more successful rich people in America than in Australia

Another article of the English language Americans fucked up is pronouncing 'Aluminium' as 'Aluminum'.
