They've got a video animation at the site you linked that illustrates the amount of space junk orbiting the Earth. How daunting must it be to navigate around all that stuff when we send another one up there? Interesting that they know this thing is coming, that it's man made, but they don't know who sent it up there in the first place.

You're confusing a piece of space junk that is going to hit earth (if it even makes it through the atmosphere), and an asteroid that is going to pass by Earth by a few hundred thousand miles. 2 different situations.
