President Obama Told More Than a Few Whoppers at His Farewell Address. Here Are Six of the Biggest: WHOA!!!! From the very beginning of President Obama's campaign in 2008, some Americans have believed that his relationship with the truth is strained at best. Since his election, he has been responsible for a number of “fish stories” — a brief list of which was compiled by Politifact. Tuesday, July 5, 2016: “The steel industry is producing as much steel in the United States as it ever was. It’s just (that) it needs one-tenth of the workers that it used to.” Politifact says: Wrong, on both counts. September 17, 2014: “Says his comment about extremists being a JV team 'wasn’t specifically referring to' Islamic State.” Politifact says: Nope. And the JV team is now Varsity. olitifact also awarded President Obama with the dubious “Lie of the Year” award for this oft-repeated prevarication: “If you like your doctor, if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it.” So for those who have been paying close attention throughout his eight years as president, the notion that Obama might have told a few whoppers during his farewell address didn't seem too far-fetched.
Ben Shapiro kept count of the fibs for the Daily Wire. Here are a few of the biggest myths presented by the outgoing president during Tuesday evening's address in Chicago:
1. “Healthcare costs are rising at the lowest rate in 50 years.”
But many Americans beg to differ, with citizens in a number of states facing yet another round of canceled plans, new doctors, and premium increases. A few states faced premium increases of more than 50%.
2. “I’ve lived long enough to know that race relations are better than they were 10, or 20, or 30 years ago."
While most would agree that race relations have improved overall since the 1980s, a good number would also agree that race relations have deteriorated rapidly over the last 8 years!
3. “We opened a new chapter with Cuba.”
However, Shapiro noted that the “new chapter” appears to contain many of the same themes as the previous chapters: “The Cuban people are still stuck living under a communist tyranny that has now been significantly enriched and empowered by Obama’s support.”
4. “We shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program without firing a shot.”
Shapiro also noted that the Obama administration just gave a nod to a shipment of natural uranium headed to Iran — 116 metric tons, to be exact. HeatSt's Masha Foliak clarified, saying that the amount was “ten nuclear bombs worth” of natural uranium.
Iran analyst Omri Ceren added, “We both allow the Iranians to exceed the heavy-water limits in the deal — and then richly compensate them with uranium that can be used for bombs. Our allies would be excused for thinking we are now promoting Iran’s interests.”
5. “We have reversed a great recession, rebooted our auto industry, and unleashed the longest stretch of job creation in our history.”
But everyday Americans are having a tough time seeing that recovery through their increased healthcare costs and inflation that has consistently outmatched increases in wages.
6. “No foreign terrorist organization has planned and executed a terror attack.”
But America took issue with President Obama's use of the term “foreign,” pointing out that “inspired by Al-Qaeda/ISIS” and “carried out by Al-Qaeda/ISIS” is likely a distinction without a difference, especially to the victims of their multiple attacks:
Little Rock, Arkansas - June 1, 2009
Fort Hood, Texas - November 5, 2009
Boston, Massachusetts - April 15, 2013
Moore, Oklahoma - October 23, 2014
Brooklyn, New York - December 20, 2014
Garland, Texas - May 3, 2015
Chattanooga, Tennessee - July 16, 2015
San Bernardino, California - December 14, 2015
Orlando, Florida - June 12, 2016
Ohio State University - November 28, 2016
Additional pieces of disinformation included President Obama's claims that he had “won marriage equality” (the Supreme Court is actually responsible for that) and “secured the right to health insurance” (he didn't “secure” it so much as “mandate” it).
