Often it's simply greed or laziness.
Other times it's circumstances.
Sometimes it's driven by hate or fear or anger or envy.
Some people have pathological disorders.
Sometimes people just make a bad choice and live to regret it.
If there was one simple answer we would have solved the problem long ago.
Well spoken Chris! I do believe Money is likely the top culprit, that being said the other Deadly Sins definitely play a roll. :)
One could certainly argue that money plays some kind of role in most aspects of our lives.
I personally believe that power also plays a big role. A lack of power can drive one to do things. The lust for power can as well.
Good answer Chris.
Follow up question if you don't mind. When criminals are caught, should they be punished - even it means going to jail?
I know where you are going with this. :) sorry Chris. Feel free to answer. My question to you Budwick is how is EVERY other country on EARTH able to keep a lower percentage of their citizens in prison VS. the USA?
The war on drugs.
The business of prisons.
Unfounded fear of crimes which leads to things like "Three Strikes And Your Out" laws.
Probably many many more as well.
War on drugs. Other Nations have tougher drug laws. Right? Not as if the US is the only Nation to use convicts for labor. Many countries have a "1 strike your out". The reasoning behind the statistics baffles me.
I don't know. Maybe they execute shoplifters?
Your guess is as good as mine. The war on drugs definitely hasn't helped. For that matter been a monumental failure. Other than that. I don't know.
Agreed - but I don't think jails are filled with people that got caught smoking weed.
Further, I think the war on drugs could be executed far more efficiently by keeping it from getting into the country in the first place!
Hey, what if we had a wall between USA and Mexico!
Nah, never mind, it would never work.
In theory I believe circumstances should be considered.
A simple example...
A starving person who steals a loaf of bread as opposed to a person who shop lifts a Ralph Lauren shirt. One I would probably let go, the other I would fine and maybe some jail time.
Would I consider the problem childhood suffered by a man who walked into a mall and shot ten people? A child molester? A bank CEO who swindled thousands of people out of their money? No. Those crimes far outweigh any mitigating circumstances.
It's complicated but I'm sure you see where I'm going.
Absolutely! Again, a very good and thoughtful answer. I hope our judges are as smart as you are.
lol...thank you, but it's much more complicated in the real world.
However, if I was The Supreme Ruler of Earth...
Really? You think so? Judges couldn't use some discretion like you described? I honestly don't know.
Seems to me that they must have some leeway. I mean I hear about some a--hole every now and then that ends up killing a family of 5 in a car accident and the SOB had 15 DWI's before hand. (In cases like that, the judge should serve the sentence with the drunk!)
However with leeway comes discretion and that's where the problems start.
I do. The thing is Why are we the Country with a higher percentage in prison than Any Other Country? We are talking Russia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan. Their laws are not lenient by any measure! Yet we still incarcerate more of our people than they do.
Yes and more death penalties in my opinion.
Couldn't have said it better.
Probably the most true answer.
I'm sure there are several reasons.
Drugs, improper upbringing, too lazy to get a job or just plain evil.
The pay is good...
The benefits in jail/prison....Not so bad..
All of the above? I would also add fun, adrenaline, necessity or survival. There's a lot of reasons that would drive someone on that path.
I don't know why people get into politics.
Easy money and too lazy to get an education or a job. Some criminals are just evil others work hard at doing whatever they do. Think how well they may have done in business or anything good instead of bad.
It's gotta be money...and then it just gets to be an easier way of making a buck...
Perhaps trauma they went through in their childhood, or, because they feel as if the whole world is against them.
Sad part is that that thought just might be true.
