+492 It's odd how when describing somebody of a different sexuality or race we say "my Mexican friend" or "my homosexual friend" but we don't say "my white friend" or "my straight friend", amirite?

"I should be allowed to differentiate between two non-descript people I dont know by saying "he is the black dude" without people accusing me of being racist, amirite?" http://www.amirite.net/post859

This post isn't very similar to that one.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I never said it was similar. I'm just saying that we shouldn't be called racist for calling people black or mexican, etc.

Not really. It's very common that you'll have only one gay friend so you'll use that to describe him. It's something that makes him stand out.

This only occurs in areas where white is the most common race, or straight is the most common sexuality, does it not? I mean, if a white guy were in say, Japan, I bet the locals would refer to him as "the white guy". However, I cannot think of an area where homosexuals are the majority. I mean, a 51% homosexual population seems somewhat plausible, but I can't think of anything like say, 80%.

gay bar?

If all your friends were black and you had one white friend then you'd probably refer to him as "your white friend".

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Exactly what I was going to comment! It all depends on who your majority of friends are.

I would be angry if someone introduced me as their homosexual friend. Most likely because it's offensiv, not to mention guys need to get lives when it comes to liking lesbians.

Well, I disagreed, becausw the majority of our population is made up of white heterosexuals, so we don't say "My white, straight friend was at the mall last night!" But, if they are your friends, why would you describe them instead of saying their name?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

You could be desribing them to somebody that doesn't know them.

Is it also odd that on TV and in movies, the main characters are usually white and straight unless there's a specific reason for them to be otherwise? It's because Western culture considers white and straight to be "normal."

I call every friend a friend. If someone then inquires "Who" then I proceed to describe them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I say 'my white friend' cuz theyres bearly any white ppl where I used to live. Now is mexican 24/7:)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, of course one wouldn't use those descriptors if they wouldn't help narrow it down. If they did, you would. That simple.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I believe it's because most of the time, straight and white are the norms. It would be redundant to say "my white friend" if the majority of your friends were white.

Why dont you just say that persons name instead of .trying to describe him or her as black or white either your gonna sound racist to someone so just sAy ... (example) "my friend andy ." "Andy who?" "you know the tall black haired one ill show u him tomrrow" so any ways dont try to describe the person by their skin color as i said before there will be one person who will think ur being racsit even if u aint

I describe all my friends like that, especially on amirite. "One of my white friends talks ghetto." "My mexican friend and I joke about race all the time." "My best friend loves me." "My black friend was so racist when I told her I like white guys." "One of my straight guy friends doesn't like gays who are guys, but one of our mutual guy friends is actually secretly gay, lol." Just some quotes from things I've said at one point or another. D;
