As soon as I heard Starbucks' insane proclamation I thought "it's financial suicide, short that stock." Here's my reasoning. For one, they had no association to the situation at all, so they could have floated along just fine. That means they're trying to capitalize on a news story by virtue signalling to the media narrative, but they're forgetting that the media is full of shit and most people don't agree with them. So, very predictably, it sparked outrage from a fairly large segment of the population if not the majority. That's not good for business.
Secondly, they're making the classic error of hiring people for reasons other than their ability to do the job. Refugees don't become refugees for their ability to serve customers. I'm sure some of them are great at customer service, but the two aren't linked, so by definition, the quality of their employees and therefore their services will suffer. All in all, it looks like a great opportunity to short sell.
I just had a look at their stock, when they made the announcement on Jan 30, their stock was at $57, two days later it was below $54, about a 6% decline over 2 days. On Friday, it bottom bounced up to $55, but unless their policy changes, the trend is likely to continue downwards as they lose earnings and market share.
I already am boycotting Starbucks only because I am to poor to get my coffee from there now
I am bad about over paying for coffee if I like it
I would take a second mortgage for chocolate :)
Seattle's Best coffee is better. They were in Borders book store. Borders is now gone.
I miss Borders
Thank ya for sharing. Its so hard to find a good book store anymore
Well, there's always Ebay and Amazon I guess. Here's something you might like...

Oh thank ya. I will have to check those out.
I do miss borders, especially because Barnes and Noble has a shit selection of music. Really? No distillers? no Julie Ruin? No Tegan and SARA!!? What is this Wal Music? "We only carry Garth Brooks, Clay Aiken, Generic Popstar 4423, and Yippee McKayay's Patriot Fest-O-Rama II: Prey the gay away!
Oh I am sure somewhere carries they things you might like.
For the first time in my life I'm gonna eat at a starbucks :)
Delicious trump supporter tears mmmmmm
No tears here. Have fun paying too much.
more money against trump's bullshit
Not really, just more money in an already very wealthy nut's pocket.
Being met with a biblical passage was such a turnoff...
I'm on board with Starbucks!!
You loved the verse. No to Starbucks.
I don't go to Starbucks because I don't like getting ripped off. However I can assure you as I was driving down the street today the 5 Starbucks I passed all had plenty of customers.
Starbucks... The Rolls Royce of coffee houses. What's not to like? Good coffee...great food. Exceptional customer service.
I always leave Starbucks feeling good.
I don't drive a rolls Royce either
I can see you driving a 70s Bug. Except you seem tall...so that might not be a good fit. :)
An old Merc?
Nice. I was going to say Volvo...but am sensitive to it's sexual undertones...
I don't waste good hard earned money on frivolous things, especially when I can make my own cafe latte at home for pennies on the dollar. Starbucks always struck me as a pretentious and condescending toward the working people of America. They just keep proving me right.
You're right. But I still like it for some of their products...their coffee is great and customer service is exceptional.
