Ever read "A Free Man's Worship" by Bertrand Russell? Not an atheist myself, but I enjoy his take on religion.
Oh wow, that's amazing. You should check him out! You would probably really enjoy his work. He was a philosopher / mathematician, maybe I'm wrong, but I figured you might be into that sort of stuff and he's one of the greats.
Dangerously over simplified but I think my purpose in life as a Christian is to know God and bring Him glory.
careful not to fall into the ranks of those who wish to use Gods name for gain and power
OK, thanks for the tip.
Spreading and enforcing the word of God is far less important than ACTING on it. Otherwise it's just words
Assholes try to control other people, doesn't matter if they're Christians, Atheists, Scientists or a bowling shoe boy..
No one can make me do anything i don't want to do.
So they can keep wasting their time, i've better things to do than worry about the silly game they're playing..
yeah, in today's society it is liberals and so called scientists who want to control us
There just does seem to be something controlling about it...from what I've noticed....
It is also to follow God and try to live as Jesus did, and not live in sin, unfortunately too many christians now try to remove parts of the bible that make them feel unfomfortable so they can be "christians" without having to follow what the bible teaches
Hmm, I disagree... Wasn't it Jesus that said:
"He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal."
I convert paths, not people.))
There are literally chapters of the bible devoted to telling you how to live your life.
When was the last time you were in a church that taught fear, hate and intolerance? Many people who say that, haven't even been in a church during their adult life.
LOL... Like I said,... when was the last time you were in a church? I grew up in an assembly of God church and I hated it. Perception of what they say changes as you get older. What hate and fear did the Baptists teach?
As long as you agree with Christianity
In the 19th century Americans started moving west and three institutions went with them. There was vaudeville, traveling entertainment. There was lyceum, traveling education and culture. And there was the itinerant preacher, offering a new style of preaching called "hell fire and brim stone". It was very entertaining, only loosely based on scripture, and pastors didn't even try to compete. Instead they switched to preaching public morality and philosophy. Eventually an entire generation grew up not knowing the first thing about the religion they claimed to believe. That is why most Christian churches don't teach doctrines, and most members don't know what they are supposed to believe.
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Sacrifice is not the greatest virtue.
True, and it's about having a better life through being a better person than you might otherwise be.
Christianity is not about bettering your own life. Christianity is about helping others as Christ did and would and about not passing judgement on people. It is not a selfish self centered thing. It is about praying to God through Jesus, and living to be the best self you can be.
I guess that's the purpose of all religions (and all personal choices, actually) - now if only the people making those personal choices respected that, that would be great.
