For me it was the visit of the travelling fair.Dodgems and winning goldfish!
Well we have a few that I look forward too but often don't go. We have a Watermelon Festival, Red, White, and Blue Festival, County Fair and the Oktoberfest. I typically just go to the Oktoberfest but haven't been for a couple of years.
We have the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Years. I've always loved it.
Where I grew up it was the Firemen's Carnival. Every summer. Sounds like your 'traveling fair'
When school was out and all the fun things we got to do in the summer months. Fireworks on the 4th, parades.....
Most looked forward to this:
But my personal favorites were these...
and Jazz Fest:
Waiting for a car to fall thru the ice on the lake
Why was I able to visualize a couple of kids just standing there, bored and in anticipation of that event?
lol something like that
There is a local art festival (arts and crafts really) called the Allentown Art Festival where I grew up in Buffalo, NY. If the weather is nice it's packed. I liked to go there and just wander about people watching.
Bonfire night, but there was once a firework that fell over and someone died, so it never happened again.
Growing up in a small town with the nearest city 150 miles away, it had to be the county fair. It was the only entertainment you didn't have to create yourself.
Carnival in may every year, I loved to go to all those rides
