but the author selects the title even though people do not choose their own names (in most situations). things even out

Well then I guess that's why people aren't books and why this is figurative language rather than literal, yeah?

You can have a book printed for a measly couple of hundred anywhere.

But good for you. It must be a delight to see what you're written in print.

I'm not sure if people can objectively judge their own work since we tend to be either overcritical or too soft on ourselves. Publishers on the other hand have power over you since you're dependent on them.
