Do you like NOT dying when your car crashes at 5 mph, or when you breath air or drink water, or when you operate machinery or plug in a coffee maker? Do you like having the right to petition your government for transparency and accountability? OR do you miss the old days of lead poisoning, black lung disease, government collusion? Do you want to dismantle the EPA, CPSC, OSHA and NTSB? Do you think over regulation is a bigger problem than the 'profits before people' motive?

Yes and no...How about the FDA? I wonder how many natural cures that are covered up and/or made illegal to use.

@Azlotto Yes and no...How about the FDA? I wonder how many natural cures that are covered up and/or made illegal to use.

The pharmaceutical industry provides about 700 million to the fda budget.
So....how many non pharmaceutical remedies do you suppose they will study and endorse?

@Azlotto Well, my guess is none. You can't patent nature, much less profit from it.

Right...but the fda is not in the business of profiting. By continuing to keep certain herb, plants, fungi, venom and secretions, on the schedule one status, they wont be studied.

@Carla Right...but the fda is not in the business of profiting. By continuing to keep certain herb, plants, fungi, venom...

Senate and Congress are not in business at all - and look how it's members profit like crazy!

@Azlotto Yes and no...How about the FDA? I wonder how many natural cures that are covered up and/or made illegal to use.

Something else that comes to mind are all the medical scams that the FDA let slide, like hair growing potions and creams, anti aging creams, products that will improve eyesight for those with degenerative diseases, and all the miracle cures that prey on the elderly and terminally ill that don't do anything at all, except take people's money.

Deregulation, isnt that and tax breaks for the biggest and wealthiest, what is going to maga? Bring back all of those companies that are paying pennies on our minimum wage per hour, and raise our salaries? Yes...that's what is going to happen.

@Carla Deregulation, isnt that and tax breaks for the biggest and wealthiest, what is going to maga? Bring back all of...

OK Carla, you can get a break on your bazillion dollar investments in a business that employs many people and pays the lions share of taxes too. Feel better?

Pick your poison:

  • Government regulating industries
  • Industries self-regulating

While these choices aren't mutually exclusive, and neither is very attractive, I lean towards favoring the former. Corporations cannot be expected to consider the costs and benefits their behavior has on society in general.

and governments do? lol, governments screw us over the worst. competition drives price down, government is monopoly which drives prices up!

HAVE YOU SEEN FLINT MICHIGAN??? that is governments doing and they sure don;t seem to consider the cost or harm they have done

@Anonymousmouse and governments do? lol, governments screw us over the worst. competition drives price down, government is monopoly...

Yes, the government is a huge, wasteful, self-perpetuating bureaucracy. Competition is good for many things. In a "free market" it exerts pressure to lower prices, improve quality, improve efficiency, maximize profits, become innovated, and so on.

Competition does not always work for the benefit of society. To lower costs, companies will maximize resources. If there is no cost to polluting the environment, we should expect them to do just that. If there is no cost to exploiting their workers, we should expect them to do that. And If there is no cost to selling unsafe products to consumers, we should expect them to do that too. Competition almost demands it.

You bring up Flint, Michigan's water problems. Yes, the state failed to protect their people. No argument there. Criminal investigation and charges are underway.

I can easily come up with problems caused by companies trying to maximize their profits.

  • Love Canal, NY: Hazardous wasted dumped by Occidental Petroleum left 33% of the residents there with "chromosomal damage", causing miscarriages, birth defects, cancer, etc..
  • Bhopal, India: A chemical leak at a Union Carbide pesticide plant exposed hundreds of thousands of people to hazardous chemical. This killed at least 3,700 people.
  • Gulf of Mexico: British Petroleum oil drill explosion and leak killed 11 people and did untold damage to the environment.
  • Raleigh County, West Virginia: Safety voilations contributed to 29 workers killed. The CEO was found guilty of conspiring to willfully violate safety standards.
    I could go on.

Over regulation strangles the economy, curtails our liberty, gives government too much control.

SOME regulation of course is necessary. That's how leftists and communists try to make conservatives wanting less government sound silly by asking stupid questions like 'Do you like not dying in a slow car crash. They take to the absurd to lure you in. And before you know it, they've taken control of every aspect of your life. Where you live, IF you live, what you eat, where you can go, what you can say, even whether you are worth giving medical treatment to or not.

@Budwick Over regulation strangles the economy, curtails our liberty, gives government too much control. SOME regulation of...

And those comments, those from the far right, try to make the left look like communists.
Trumps proposed cuts to the epa, great lake conservation, clean air and water act, shrinking of utah (so far) monuments., etc., etc. Those moves hurt the common citizen, but are huge gifts to corporations, who care nothing about poisoning our water air and earth. They have proven that again and again. They will not police themselves.
Im not even going into this tax plan and eliminating frank dodd.

Profit, profit, profit.
If you that is going to trickle down, you are just an indoctrinated as they want you to be.

TRY to make the left look like communists?

The EPA needed some reins applied. During the Obama years, they were allowed to enact policies that actually require congressional approval. They got out of hand.

Other stuff you mentioned literally gave federal government control over bodies of water as insignificant as a puddle in your backyard. It's over reach Carla.

The concept of the EPA is great. They got out of control. Maybe, the pendulum is swinging too far back - maybe. We need to reach a reasonable balance. Despite the ugly picture in your mind you may have developed of conservatives, we actually don't roast babies at bar-b-ques, don't push old people over cliffs, or have a secret desire to poison people.

Have you paid any attention to anything? Like say flint Michigan? The government poisoned the water. And have YET to do anything about it. Companies that screw us over are always the corporatist who works with big government. Not private sector
