Selling one's expertise or talent is a mean quality. Good people will only use their talents in the service of people.

Experts like doctors, lawyers, engineers, chartered accountants, cinema people and many others extract heavy charges from their patients, clients, customers etc for their service. In country like India patients have to shell out such huge sums for hospital expenses that they become paupers finally. These experts do not need so much for their living expenses. But still they collect so much because of their misguided opinions about life. Society's respect for wealth over all other things is the cause for this trend. Certainly this should be considered as mean mindedness.

If you don't get paid, you don't eat. If everything was free many people wouldn't even work at all.

I don't say one should not get paid for their services. I only say that professionals should not get overpaid. Getting professional fees is different from charging exorbitant charges for a service. This is what I say as selling the expertise.

They don't have a choice. College for doctors costs an unbelievable amount of money. Some never get out from under the debt; then there's malpractice insurance. Maybe that needs to be fixed so that the doctors don't have to charge so much.

Ezhil - Your position on this is not thought out. If a doctor were to work for free or for the same money as the gardener, how would a doctor justify the many expensive years of school, keeping up with technology, long hours, high pressure, etc. A sure way to destruction of a medical system would be to over regulate.

You wrote - "These experts do not need so much for their living expenses. But still they collect so much because of their misguided opinions about life." Who made you the arbiter of how much people need?

I have no idea what you for a living but what ever it is, I bet there are others that do the same work better or worse than you. Should you all be paid the same?

The society makes you a doctor , engineer or some such expert with the expectation that you will help the society back. After getting the education from the schools and colleges set by the society and the government you are expected to help and not rob it. The society did not force you to become a doctor or somebody and it was on your own decision. If the schools and colleges were established by your parents for making you somebody then probably your arguments may have some validity.
Well educated people should not think like traders. Professionals should not think in terms of " Investment and Returns". If one is so particular about making a lot of money he or she should choose business as career. Professionals should have some ethics in their practice.

Society 'makes you a doctor'? NO kidding? So, it's not the self sacrifice? years of higher education? Gigantic personal investment? Sacrifice of personal life? Wow, who knew?

You should get in on that Ezhil. Have society make you into something!

Unless one is born into wealth, most of us need to be paid for what we do. I've been more than happy to pay for services over the years .... from piano lessons to tax preparation. Getting paid doesn't prevent people from caring and doing their best to help.

That's not even mentioning the ridiculous price for malpractice insurance.

That would do well in a commune, or services to a neighbor, friend, or relative, but that's just about it.

Selling anything is a choice.
