It depends on where you are. In most parts of California you are not actually a person if you don't own a car. In most parts of Arizona it's enough to know somebody who owns a car.
The Russians showed "Grapes Of Wrath" to the trogs so they could see how workers were downtrodden in the USA. What the trogs took away from the flick was that in America even the poorest family could own a car.
