+40 Party based elections in country like India has miserably failed in delivering the goods.Invariably party is more important than the ideology for the contestants . Therefore democracy is derailed . So, elections should be not party oriented but only candidate oriented. amirite?

This is true of most countries I hear about now. People don't care who the candidate is or what they stand for. They're die hard fans of a certain party, the other party is the enemy, so if their party wins they win and the other loses. See: Trump.

Yes. What is that that prevents people from having a common goal of good governance? The horizon of materialistic societies do not go beyond the self. All are busy in making fast buck at any cost. The social divisions in society abet this selfish tendency. Social divisions in India are quite strong and highly divisive.

It doesn't make much difference if they say what you want to hear, but then do what they want anyway. Getting the big money out of politics would be more beneficial to the system than anything else. JMHO

Yes, big money plays the spoil sport in elections. Can we not think of a mechanism in which money cannot play any role. In the name of democracy we are cheating the gullible common man.

Yes, money is the cause for the misuse and derailment of the celebrated system, democracy

I'm wondering why you singled out India. Name any nation with democratic elections, that isn't party-based.

Yes, probably you are correct. Let us ponder over why this happens.

There's a simple reason it happens. It takes a lot ... LOT ... of money to run an advertising campaign to convince people to "buy" something. And that's what political campaigns are, as well. Convincing people to "buy into" a candidate. The best way to raise a lot of money, is to get a lot of people who have the same ideals to contribute. Political parties were a necessity, before modern "crowd funding".

"The best way to raise a lot of money, is to get a lot of people who have the same ideals to contribute." Why should we spend so much money in an election? It is mainly used to convince or bribe the gullible. In politics there are no ideals. The only agenda is to get their henchmen elected or money making.
