Money started as coinage, probably in Lycia around 1500 BCE, banking and banking IOU slips didn't appear until Venetian times, about three thousand years later.

There were trade-bars of precious metals to standard weights as early as Egyptian and Sumerian times, but those are not generally seen as money.
