Ships had to carry extra. English sailors were contractually allotted 8 ounces of rum...every day! Sailing sucked and was dangerous as hell...butt.. at least they had 8 shots of rum per day!

Huh, no wonder peg legs and eye patches were common. They were constantly drunk.

Also water wasn't always potable so alcohol was safer to drink.
