Navigating no matter what you drove was more difficult. You had to have an up to date map and know how to read it

Perhaps the control room would give them directions looking at a map like a rally driver co pilot ( pilot? )

I think about this often, except with pizza deliverers

ER doc here. All of our drivers for fire/EMS are still tested on random street intersections regularly to ensure that they can navigate without computers. They know their area's roads exceptionally well.
