+52 People who want high school and college sports to be abolished never played sports themselves, amirite?

The reason why I hate University sports is because the school I attended decided to form a soccer team my third year there and the school raised tuition $130 per semester for every student to fund it. Schools make millions off college sports, and still think they have the right to nickel and dime all students, even if they don't play, out of hard earned money just to "fund" extracurricular activities.

So you believe schools shouldn't be funding any extracurriculars?

Schools should have extracurricular activities, but if the school makes money off it, the students should not have to pay for it, especially those that don't engage in the activity. I'm taking about colleges specifically. I pay school taxes and they have every right to spend it as needed and I have no problem with high schools using that money for sports. With colleges tuition, the cost should not be inflated to fund activities most students won't benefit from. Those that engage with the activity should foot the bill rather than pass it on to everyone. A student paying to become a doctor should not have to pay extra for an athlete to play football on his free time. Just my opinion.

Schools make money off sports events, which is fine. My issue is charging students extra tuition to host those events while simultaneously pocketing the money. Why should students pay more to have a sports team when the school is already making tons of money off that team?

That is an argument for getting rid of all extracurriculars

I get that some people need something like sports or dance to open doors for then if they're an average student but as someone who played sports in high school... I didn't even mention it on my transcripts. In my opinion college is a place for academics and trying to play softball would have messed with my transition. At some schools sports make money at others they're just there. Plus it felt kind of childish to keep playing organized sports when no one around campus was really into it. My campus has a girl's soccer team that is always short on players and didn't play at all this past year, definitely a waste of money. Things like student government and honor society are always filled to the brim thou.

> Plus it felt kind of childish to keep playing organized sports when no one around campus was really into it. Do people really grow out of sports?

Schools put too much emphasis on sports, kids are there to learn. I like sports and we will always have them, but when parents get upset because their kids aren't the best, or don't play well, then something is wrong.
