Not true. Despite pop culture's portrayal, gladiator fights were rarely to the death. It was a spectacle of swordplay, but often once one gladiator won by removing the opponent's weapon and having a sword to his throat, that was the end of the match. It was often considered bad form to kill your opponent. Of course, it did happen where one died, and there were places were fights to the death occured, but it was far from the norm.
