Blasters in the Star Wars Universe are either extremely difficult to control for accuracy or poorly designed. amirite?

For the guns that Imperial stormtroopers use, it was canon for a long time that they were made by the lowest bidder (and therefore badly designed). Not sure what the reason was, but the extended universe had a reason why stormtroopers had such rotten accuracy.

I would guess the reason is because there would be such an unimaginably large number of stormtroopers needed to maintain control over an entire galaxy

Yeah, but if these guys are the backbone of your military force, wouldn't you want them to reliably be able to hit what they're aiming at instead of just spraying fire all over the general vicinity?

I mean that would be nice, but on the scale we are dealing with, perhaps it just isn't cost effective?

Also, a big part of tyrants maintaining control is through fear. You could make the argument that it is more important to just have a scary, faceless, armed stormtrooper to maintain order and compliance just by standing there and being scary, than having one that can actually be effective

I guess. That only works a few times, though. Once people face the Empire a few times and realize that the stormtroopers can't reliably hit the inside of a barn from inside the barn, the "scary faceless army of identical soldiers" thing kinda loses its impact. Sure, they look terrifying, but the safest place to be when a stormtrooper fires his gun is right in front of him.

Most blasters are cheaply mass produced and therefore don't work very well. But some more expensive blasters that might have a more limited production can be very good. In Rogue One, we see Death Troopers be incredibly accurate and deadly, because they're better trained and have better blasters. But most normal stormtroopers have minimal training and crappy blasters
