You could visit the vast majority of the world without really needing a translator if you learned just six languages: English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, and Chinese. amirite?

Not in my experience. English won't get you very far in the rural parts of Latin America for example

Yeah. Rural. But anywhere else. It's the language of business. Every airline and airport has to announce in local language and in English.

But still almost half of the population of the world is based in rural areas. People still live there. And in rural Latin America you can't talk to them without at least knowing Spanish. And even then some people only speak indigenous languages.
