You put ‘an' instead of ‘a' before ‘hour' because the h is silent, amirite?

"I spent an hour at a university library."

I put a. When I pronounce it the H isn't silent

There are still people who put "an" before words like "history" and "hotel", even though those words now have the h pronounced. It's a good way to sound posh, but it mostly survives in writing.

"an" is used in front of any word that starts with a vowel sound except "y". It's literally one of the easiest grammar lessons in English.

Note that I said 'sound'
