+105 Atheists should not say things like "Oh my god!", "Goddamn it!", or "Go to hell!", amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No one should say it... Atheists because they don't believe in God and everyone else that DOES believe in God 'cause if you believe in God you should have enough respect/fear for Him to not take his name or the things he created lightly.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

AMEN!! true that!!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

true about "goddamn it" but i think its more about using his name in vain. respect, yes, but i don't think you should be afraid of saying his name. god is not voldemort.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No I wasn't saying you should fear saying His name... but most of the time those things are said out of anger and people shouldn't resort to yelling God's name out when they're angry... Idk what to think when someone says OMG out of shock... I dunno if that's okay or not. Hell isn't something to joke about or sentence someone to... cuz that's not something in your power... if you believe in God you'll leave that up to Him (this is why I said fear)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

oh ok that makes a lot more sense. i'm agnostic and i don't even think you should say anything like go to Hell. if it exists, its not something to take lightly. and i'm in hell or hot as hell is an exaggeration. and if you follow Christianity, its using the Lord's name in vain. but still, these words have different connotations now and are not normally meant to be taken literally.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"God is not Voldemort"-HAHAHA

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just like saying something is "gay" or "retarded", even though it may not be right or politically correct, it's just an expression and not meant literally.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

God's name and creations, (meaning hell) if you believe in Him, are not just expressions.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, but the proposed statement, was that atheists should not use those phrases. To Atheists they are just expressions, because to them there is no God, or Hell to damn him to.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah I know but that's disrespectful to everyone that believes in God... so it shouldn't be done.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

When I was a practicing Christian, we still said things that were probably very offensive and disrespectful to other people, whether something was "gay, retarded, or Jew" and I still know many of them who say "Oh Buddha" instead of "Oh my God". It goes both ways. Half of the things I say will will offend or disrespect someone, we can't all walk on eggshells just because someone might get their feelings hurt.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not saying you have to walk on eggshells but there are some things that shouldn't be done... there's nothing wrong with being a courteous person and if you run around saying "there is no God" then you shouldn't use His name. Also I don't get why someone would just randomly be called a Jew.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well I don't believe in unicorns, but I can still talk about them. Or should I not just in case someone does believe in unicorns and would be offended? I don't think that people who believe in God should be offended because an Atheist is not using His name in vain, because to them there is no Him, changing the connotation of the phrase. When one says "that is so Jew" it usually means it's overwhelming or strict. People also say "that's not kosher" in regards to something that isn't right or isn't allowed.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Who cares if it's disrespectful? So now we should censor everything we say because it might possibly in the slimmest way possible offend somebody? It's only offensive to the crazy extreme people or the ones who are there just to piss people off by shouting "You're offending my religious beliefs!! WAHH" And the reason why people use those phrases is because it's become a standard expression in the world, if you grew up hearing it everyday it becomes almost instinctual to say it. Like if you hurt yourself very badly most people who never ever curse usually end up saying "Oh shit that hurt" or something like that...it's an expression that's been carried down for generations and will likely stay that way forever, regardless if one believes or not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And also In fact, the only probable way those phrases will disappear is if everybody stops believing in God altogether and forgets about it and doesn't teach their children that expression and then their kids won't say it and their kids won't say it and soon nobody will say it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lol is that relavant?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It just comes force of habit. I'll invest into making some Athiest phrases to shout when angry.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

EVOLUTIONDAMNIT?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Flying Spaghetti Monster damn it!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

omg ive heard of that, and i love you!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lol. Love it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

R'Amen

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This words are now part of the english language, thus, many of their connotations have changed, and anyone can say them, obviously they have different meanings now than they did a hundred years ago

by Anonymous 13 years ago

exactly! and its also a habit. i say it way more than i should because i'm agnostic but yeah they do have different meanings now

by Anonymous 13 years ago

nope! not buying it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sorry, they're just generic exclamations now... But if you believe in God you shouldn't be saying them either because it's using his name in vain.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I try not to but they just slip out D: I'm trying to think of things to replace them with

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My friend says "Oh your god," because he's atheist (I am too, but that's irrelevant). He makes it sound natural, too. Pretty funny.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What the hell ever happened to my god damn constitutional right to say whatever the hell I please? Oh my god, people these days make me want to kick a god damn baby. People who think like this need to go to hell. God damn it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

my atheist friend tells me to go to hell on a daily basis. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hell doesn't exist. Neither does god. The evidence is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE. your argument is invalid

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There is no solid evidence that we were brought on to this planet through the work of God or through science. People can believe what they believe, but there is NO evidence either way. No scientists have been able to prove how we were brought on to the planet. Some people say that we were evolved through monkeys, but how did the monkeys get on the planet? No matter what.. no one knows.. so don't say that there is evidence right in front of our faces, because there isn't.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNf-P_5u_Hw There's your evidence. Suckaaaaa

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm Atheist. I say stuff like that. So do my Catholic friends. They're just expressions. No one is offended, unless they're hardcore by-the-Bible.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

science cant create what we have on this earth. the emotions each person has, the way a flower blossoms, that was all just in a BIG BANG? hmm.....i would rethink it if i was u. and i honestly dont care what people say, i wish they wouldnt offend God, but its true, their first amendment rights says they can and its their opinoin and their decision. just we deserve the same respect as u guys get for not believeing...just a thought.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm a Christian but I respect other religions or lack of religion. I can understand just saying things because that is what you have heard all your life but it also seems ironic whenever someone who doesn't believe in God says these things. I don't think it's a bad thing because Christian words have no or little weight to atheists and agnostics. However, I think that the above statement was just bringing into focus the irony of the situation.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've retrained myself to pluralize the deity cursing . . . I'm polytheistic (with a good dose of doubt as well). Godsdamnit, oh for the love of the gods, etc. are commonplace for me. I'm working on using 'curse it all to hades' as opposed to 'damn it all to hell' and the like, but that's been a little harder

by Anonymous 13 years ago

God is not a name, its a certain type of entity. You can say God as much as you want. The name of God in western religion, the God known as "YHWH", is the one your not supposed to take in vain.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you don't think those sorts of phrases should be said, then don't say them. To most people that use them they're just empty expressions. I shouldn't have to change the way I speak just because it may not coincide with your beliefs.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're not buying that words change over time? because that is just ridiculous
