Our heads got too big. Half of what other animals would consider fetal development happens for our 0-6mo selves, out of the womb. But if we waited until we were "fully baked" we'd never survive childbirth EVER and wouldnt have the population necessary to avoid extinction let alone evolve further. So we have to do it early so the head can still make it out, then finish up outside the womb.

This is called the "obstetricians dilemma" or "obstetrical dilemma"

It has to do with our large brains and women's birth canals basically being at evolutionary odds with eachother

"intelligent" is a relative term

And when you evolve to walk upright so the size of your hips gets smaller and you can't develop fully like other animals in the womb because it would make birth even more dangerous
