This is the truth.
And also endless wars

There right now. It's bad
But everyone's hiring
You typically need an address and a phone to get a job
Yes! And clothing, toiletries etc. add the fact that it's basically illegal to be homeless (not a crime per say, but most places don't allow camping etc) and it's pretty much a vicious cycle. You need money to earn money.
ID's are a big issue too.
I spent several months homeless and I had a job most of that time.
Homelessness is more complicated than people being broke. There are psychological and chemical reasons for homelessness.
What are some examples of"chemical reasons" for homelessness?
Drug addiction. Opioid epidemics. Etc.
Ohh so like.. because drugs are chemical!
Chemical dependencies. Chemical imbalances. Figured that was short but broad enough to cover it.
To add to op's point depression or high dopamine tolerance can lead to lack of motivation to do anything with life and hence homelessness
You ever wonder how the beggers always find cardboard and a marker?
We put them all in prison. Now they have a home. USA has the highest prison rates per capita in the world.
Thank you! We're about to have debates as different ideologies at school, and I don't know, but I just liked this phrase. I'll use it.
Agree, we are being weakened and coddled by the government and becoming less self reliant as a result. This hurts an individual's ability to motivate themselves out of bad situations before they become worse.
You're right if we had really strong governments like Brazil and India we would have slums where self-reliant people build houses on other people's property, other people can't prevent them from building on their property because of the weak government. So I think what your advocating for is a weaker government that doesn't protect people's property rights am I correct? You want a weak government so homeless people can build houses anywhere they want correct? That would indeed solve the homeless problem.
Or better rehabilitation programs
I'm saying a government that starts providing too much cripples you bc you don't learn to become self reliant. It's just like in school if someone does all your homework for you then you never actually learn anything.
Beer Street and Gin Lane, 👀. Yeah the only government assistance they had back then was the workhouse and I'd take a gander and say it was a lot worse. Can't pull yourself up by the boot straps if you've had to eat your boot straps for dinner.
Has nothing to do with self reliance. It has more to do with opportunities, cost of living, mental illness, drug decency, and overall health of society.
But being told from childhood that the govt will always help u out and you should rely on them cripples your mentality that you should take more personal responsibility for your outcome in life. You are conditioned to become a victim bc you start believing "what's the point of trying"
I think that's true, and also that the less disparity between the richest and the poorest, the happier and society is.
That shows an incredible lack of knowledge. The countries with the least range currently are ones such as North Korea, think they are happy?
The Soviet Union had no range, was it a happy place?
This is asinine
It is a construct to be unhappy because others have more.
Man, the world is doing amazing then!
Other than the last 3-5 years, there has been siginficiant decade-on-decade decreases in himelessness.
Sure there was a one-time spike in the late 1970s and early 1980s as 300,000 mentally ill people were released from confinement in state "asylums", but overall that was seen as a positive as those institutions weren't as humane as they could have been.
Society's treatment and care for they homeless in western countries has skyrocketed and again, despite a one time event in the 70s and the last couple years, had been declining steadily since people moved to cities in the first place.
Homelessness is a policy failure. A person, or a family can hit a rough patch, and that is just life. Massive amounts of house less people is a direct result of local powers not zoning, permitting, and approving of building homes. Why aren't we putting in duplexes, quadplexs, townhouses, small apartments everywhere we can? Policy. NIMBY'S.
NIMBYs hold up all kinds of progress. It's one thing to be against one thing or another as a matter of principle, but the whole NIMBY argument is one entirely borne of selfishness.
Yes, yes it is. There is not a more cut, and dried example of pulling the ladder up behind you than housing NIMBYism.
It's cool to hate the homeless until you get a 40,000 medical bill and suddenly can't pay rent. It can happen to you.
Exactly. No one is immune. We're all a couple of rogue billing cycles a way from the street.
Fun fact. Other countries think we are crazy.
That's not fun
We are crazy
Fun fact, many of those countries that think the US IS crazy actually have higher rates of poverty and homelessness than the US.
You think your landlord will evict you because you have an unpaid medical bill?
Yes? Obviously?
Yeah, this is a weird take... Pay your rent, not your medical bill.
Sure, medical debt sucks and we should fix it, but it doesn't make people homeless.
