The landings happened. But NASA faked or doctored pics b/c they didn't always have the best pics (the safety of the mission was more important than photography) and they figured people wouldn't care if the pics were "cleaned up" a little. That's the controversy.
i know they happened, there's overwhelming evidence, the original broadcast that was broadcasted around the world live was the REAL ACTUAL LANDING, but the original tapes for it were said to be lost, so it could be possible that nasa had to perhaps recreate it
Eh, the Americans believed there was a bomber and later missile "gap" with the Soviets, based on their claims, and set about increasing their numbers. In reality the US was already ahead, and spent billions of dollars to widen the opposite gap. The Soviet economy couldn't afford to counter it.
The Cold War was crazy like that, as sceptical as you were about the other side's claims, you made plans based on them being true. And yes, the Lunar Landing had a military purpose too - "if we can land people on the Moon using rockets, we can deliver those same rockets anywhere we choose on Earth with a nuclear payload."

The blooper reel alone proves it. When they trip and kick up dust, those particles fall at the rate of gravity on the moon, not earth. We were half a century away from cgi that could possibly be that accurate. Particle physics takes a lot more rendering than other things and all the computers used at the time weren't as powerful as a single phone is now. (And I'm not sure a basic phone can presently render particle physics that accurate in any reasonable time)
