Very true, and because of that a false sense of entitlement is rampant now in this country at least (USA) imo when people reach a certain age. Also this is the exact same feeling and opinion i have, except with people having children, and then considering themselves a "parent." LMFAO in MANY cases i have personally seen...
This must be especially weird nowadays with the speed things change, most old people have knowledge that's irrelevant now.
I can understand some undeserved respect , but when you watch a man turn a piece of fire wood into a chair Respect is due .
There are young people who can do that.
Yes there are 🙂
I guarantee this idea of elderly wisdom is ancient. Before most people could read and write. There's nothing to say they're wrong, and they're the most reliable (only) sources of historical info at a time where texts weren't easily accessible.
Nowadays we can dispute and recognise that things have changed since way back when, whereas before without text keeping track of changes, it was harder to quantify how relevant elderly wisdom is in any particular moment.
I reckon wisdom is still something that should be revered though. It really is something you can only gain with experience. Some old people get undue respect as a result, but there's still lots of old people with real lessons to teach. You learn a lot in 80 years. Some useless, some indispensably valuable.
And the assumption that older people are worth less is something they don't deserve as well. That speaks to making assumptions, get it?
You know, in the great crap shoot of life, a lot of things gotta fall your way to make it. And the deck keeps getting stacked higher & higher.
"Just because a goat has a beard does not mean he is wise."
"Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad."
I see you've met my in-laws.
In-laws are either super chill or complete cunts, nothing in between.
I think long ago, people's experience was probably one of the biggest sources of education available, so it was justified.
But at this point we're able to share knowledge and experiences so easily that old people's naturally earned wisdom is trifling in comparison.
That said, not everything can be really learned from lessons or Google, so there's still some types of wisdom that mainly comes with age.
Yeah, but usually we only see one wise village elder in historical/fictional depictions.
That's cause those are cartoons, with a limited number of main characters
I think another factor is that the world is changing faster than it used to, so old people's experience isn't as relevant to young people as it used to be.
That's true. Someone's ability to process and vet information is more important that their age now in terms of wisdom.
Agree - getting knocked around in life teaches some valuable lessons ... well, it should anyhow. Some people refuse to learn.
Not just that, being old in the past wasn't super common and usually It was the wisest who lived to be old. nowadays pretty much any idiot can survive long enough to die from old age.
Old guy here. You have no idea just how true this is.
I see a lot of my peers crowing about their hard-won wisdom and demanding respect on social media... but they remain just the same dumb dildos they were in high school.
Back then being old meant you hadn't messed up so badly that you died so you must've done something right. Now it just means you're average.
Somebody once told me that hard ice teas for pussys I should grab some beer from the bcl (pussy) I was lookin to get drunk and I had like thirteen bucks and there was no more cariboo on the shelf (sold out).
So hay y'all's on sale so I gotta jump on it shotgun four and I gotta go vomit didn't make sense just to drink like four my brain got dumb when I drank six more. So much to drink I gotta piss so I take two cans to the bathroom original flavour no doubt (no doubt) I drink em all till I black out. Hey y'all southern ice tea it's a tasty beverage it puts me in a good mood when I see it in the fridge 5% alcohol buy a fukin porch pack and drink them all!
Imo, if you're over 60 I respect you. You made it that far, you didn't give up, good job.
Plenty of people give up without killing themselves.
Have had this conversation with my husband one too many times about how people are able (with the help of medicine) to grow old but many are not elders/wise. So we're supposed to respect our elders or listen to advice but I'm not so sure I want their advice.
The association with being young and hot did a lot more damage
Being old was a big deal back then lol, but you're right about undeserved respect..
yo people keep liking and disliking this
I don't see old people getting respect often enough.
Thanks for the advice Hagrid.
